RE: Neighborhood Social Networks

Startup NextDoor, a social network organized around neighborhoods, is now in 3,600 neighborhoods and adding about 20 new ones per day, up from 176 neighborhoods nine months ago.

The site is organized in a Facebook-like activity feed, where members ask questions of others in the neighborhood. About 20% of the posts on the site are about crime or safety. Engagement is also high on the site, with about 40% of members have contributed posts on the site.

NextDoor also sends emails to members so that they do not have to go to the site to see what is happening in their neighborhood. A new feature called groups lets people discuss particular interests such as sports groups, without the entire neighborhood having to see posts about specific interests.

The new Mobile Mindset study, conducted by Harris Interactive, has revealed a great deal of new information about the habits of mobile phone users. Nearly 60% of those surveyed said they don’t go more than an hour without checking their phone, while 73% said they felt a sense of panic if/when their device is lost. The most surprising statistic though, at least to us, were the primary reasons people fear losing their phones — only six percent of those surveyed said they were worried that valuable account information could be stolen, while 38% cited the cost and hassle of replacing the phone.
